Replacing Floppy Disk Drives
Older PC-based systems that use a floppy disk for loading and saving programs and program parameters
were popular for a long time. Today, those old drives are wearing out, and the floppy disks are also. The floppy disks
are becoming difficult to buy, and eventually will dissappear from the marketplace altogether.
Today, a popular removable medium is the USB Flash Drive. These range from 128MB to 512GB and higher, and in the lower capacities, are very inexpensive to buy. Micromodules Co. has created a replacement unit that accepts the USB removable flash drives. Although any flash drive used will only have the capacity of the floppy disk it replaces, they are mostly impervious to the environment. The drives can be carried in your pocket without any special protection, and are difficut to damage. In general usage, a USB flash drive can last up to 10 years. Our unit connects to the original floppy data/control and power cables, as did the floppy drive it is replacing. The size is the same as a floppy drive, and the mounting holes are in the exactly the same locations, making installation very easy. The best feature of our unit is that it works with ALL Windows and DOS operating systems, and most likely with others as well. Furthermore, the unit needs NO DEVICE DRIVERS with Windows and DOS, and will read and write to the USB drive JUST LIKE THE FLOPPY IT REPLACES. This drive supports BOOTABLE USB DRIVES, but only with our bootable media. See the following page: bootable flash media for more detail. |
